SCA Fundraiser for United Way

By Braiden

The SCA had a fundraiser for the United Way in November. Whichever teacher got the most votes got their beard shaved off! The United Way is a fundraising company that uses the money they get from schools to create opportunities for others to have a better life. The United Way provides education, income, and health because of the all the hard work they do. The United Way helps all sorts of different charities by holding fundraisers at schools worldwide. The United Way has a fundraiser called Mission United, to raise money for the veterans and soldiers who fought in wars and those who have relatives that fought in wars.

Our school sold tickets for $1 and students put their tickets in the jar with the picture of the staff member they wanted to shave their beard off. The staff members students that could vote for were: Mr. Nate, Mr. Chris, Mr. Estep, Mr. Thompson, and Mr. Orebaugh.

The SCA earned $428 for the United Way through this fundraiser. That is more than $200 more than was raised last year through the Pie in Your Face Fundraiser. Great job, Wildcats!

Safety Patrols

by Krissi and Maddie

We interviewed Mrs. Connelly about school safety. She answered four questions for us.

When Mrs. Connelly is at school she thinks school safety is her #1 priority. Krissi and I also think that school safety is very important. When Mrs. Connelly was in school there were safety patrols, which is super cool. Mrs. Connelly has been a safety patrol leader since she has worked at Windsor Woods.

As a safety patrol, you are expected to be a role model for the rest of the school. Here are some ways that safety patrols could get their belts taken away:
  • Forgetting your belt three times
  • If your grades and homework are not up
  • Behavior concerns

An Interview with Mr. Nate, Our New Library-Media Specialist

  • What is your favorite type of book? (Fiction, non-fiction or biography.)
Fiction.  My favorite genre in fiction is science fiction fantasy.  I love being transported to another world where anything is possible!

  • What does being a school librarian mean to you?
It means that I like to introduce students to new passions, whether it’s books, MakerSpace activities, or researching new information.

  • Where do you get all these Words Of  The Week?
I look in my favorite books and find all these splendiferous words.

  • How do you get all these ideas for MakerSpace?
I do lots of research on the newest technology, and what challenges students would have the most fun participating in.  I really want the MakerSpace to be a place where students can be challenged, creative and work together for a common goal!

APEX Fun Run

Newspaper Club Members, Krissi and Maddie sat down with Mr. Orebaugh to find out more information about our school fundraiser, the Apex Fun Run.

Good Morning Mr. O,

1. Do you think the school had fun at the Apex Fun Run, and why?
Answer:  I do certainly think everyone had fun. We talked about it for two weeks; talked about the character-building and got excited. Everyone participated and raised money for our school.

2. How much money did the school raise?
Answer:  Our school is still raising money, but so far we have 95% of the money people said they would give us. We have collected almost 9,000 dollars. That is 3,000 dollars more than last year!

3. Did you run any laps and if you did how many did you run?
Answer: I did run a couple laps with all of the grades but mostly the preschoolers to show them the path. I didn't have anyone mark my laps though.

4. What grade level raised the most money?
Answer: Third grade ended up with the most money. But we are still collecting pledges.

5. What is the school doing with the money we raised?
Answer: The money going into the P.T.A. account. We are looking into fun programs like Type to Learn and other programs that can be used with our Chromebooks and at home.

6. What makes you proud about the APEX Fun Run?

Answer: I was very proud of the effort and every student trying their best. I also loved seeing the parents and teachers showing their pride and cheering for students.

Bullying Awareness Month

All Newspaper Club Members
October 2017 - All information obtained from http://www.stompoutbullying.org

October is Bullying Awareness Month. Bullying is a serious problem in many schools. Bullying is when someone hurts or scares someone on purpose, over and over again. This can include calling someone harmful/dangerous names, hurting them physically, leaving them out of activities on purpose, embarrassing them, playing hurtful pranks or messing up their property - and it happens repeatedly.

Bullying can also happen online. This is called cyber-bullying. Cyber-bullying is when kids bully each other using the internet, cell phones, or other cyber technology.

It is important to know WHY someone is being a bully to figure out how to handle a him/her. Sometimes people bully because they want attention. Sometimes its because they have been bullied and they have learned this behavior from someone else. Sometimes people bully others because it makes them feel more powerful and better about themselves.

If you're being bullied there is a lot that you can do! Depending on how bad the bullying is, you might want to try to work it out yourself. This will help you feel more powerful and will let the bully see that you aren't willing to let them treat you this way.

If You Feel Safe, Here Are Some Ways To Handle The Bully:

  • Walk away when the bully approaches you. Try and imagine you’re walking away from a stranger. Both you and your body language will show you don’t care.
  •  Try talking to the bully. Use this sentence starter - "I feel ______ when you _______."
  • When the bully harasses you and calls you names, look them in the eyes, LAUGH and walk away without any additional conversation.
Each of these strategies take away the bully's power.

If you try these ways to handle the bully and the bullying continues - TELL SOMEONE! You could tell your parents, teacher, school counselor, school nurse, or any adult you trust. Be sure to tell them exactly what happened. If you suspect someone else is being bullied, it's a good idea to report that, too. Most adults really do care about bullying and will be glad that you told them about it.

If you tell an adult and you don't think they are doing anything about the bullying or if the situation isn't improving, tell another adult. Keep telling adults until someone does something to help.

Most importantly, don't be a bystander. Don't just stand by and watch if you see someone being bullied. If you don't do anything to help the person being bullied, you are sending a message to the bully that what they are doing is okay.

STAND UP for others! Be a Hero! It's up to you ... It's up to all of us!
